Hate crimes can take many different forms, ranging from insults through to damage to property, physical attacks and even murder. Unfortunately, it all too often takes the form of ongoing harassment.
When this occurs in, or around, the victims own home many people feel they have no other choice but to leave. That is where the SWOP project comes in.
The SWOP project supports victims of hate crimes due to sexual orientation, faith, race or disability (or perceived disability), where the harassment is experienced in, or around, a person's home. The project offers longer-term advocacy and support to the victims, with a focus on their housing needs.
In this way, we help the victims of hate crime to remain within their own homes or, where necessary, to provide support and assistance in re-housing the client if the harassment they are suffering makes it unsafe for them to remain where they are.
The SWOP project is also unique as whilst it works with victims of harassment to keep them safely in their own home, it also provides guidance and support to help the victims take action against the perpetrators.
For the SWOP project, we work closely with Southwark Housing and the Southwark Anti-Social Behaviour Unit (SASBU).
