Many witnesses feel worried about going to court, regardless of whether or not they were the victim of the crime.
Victim Support Southwark provides a Witness Service at Tower Bridge Magistrates Court, which gives information and support to over 1,000 witnesses, victims and their family and friends every year.
VSS’s Witness Service will help:
- Prosecution and defence witnesses
- Victims of crime and their families and friends attending court for whatever reason
- Children as well as adults
Trained staff and volunteers at the Witness Service can offer the following:
- Someone to talk to in confidence
- Visits to the court beforehand, and chances to learn about procedures
- A safe, comfortable waiting area
- Someone to accompany you in the court room when giving evidence
- Practical help, such as claiming expenses
- Access to people who can answer specific questions about the case (the witness service cannot discuss evidence or offer legal advice)
- A chance to talk about the case when it has ended and seek further help or information
